Arthur Wint was the first Jamaican to receive an Olympic gold medal after he won the men's 400 metres in London in 1948.
Jamaica first participated in the Olympics in 1948. Arthur Wint brought home gold (400m) and silver (800m) medals while Herbert McKenley took home a silver medal (400m).
Since the 1948 Olympics Jamaica has "bagged" 13 gold, 24 silver and 16 bronze medals. All these medals were earned in Track and Field except for a bronze in cycling in 1980.
Deon Hemmings is the first Jamaican woman to win an individual Olympic gold medal when she won the 400m Hurdles at the 1996 Olympics. Merlene Ottey is our most decorated Olympian having won eight Olympic medals.
Usain Bolt won the gold medal in the men's 100m and 200m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He is the first man to set world records in both events at the same Olympics. The last person to win the men's 100m and 200m at the same Olympics is Carl Lewis back in 1984. (Ps.) Donald Quarrie won silver in the 100m and gold in the 200m in 1976.
