Name: Usain "Lightning" Bolt
Date of birth: August 21, 1986
Place of birth: Trelawny, Jamaica
Height: 6 ft 5 in (1.96 metres)
Best Known For... Gold at '08 Beijing Olympics for 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay
At 22 years old Usain Bolt is still very playful and rarely turns down an invitation to a good party. However, when the gun went off for the start of the Beijing Olympics 100m and 200m sprints, his focused and determined attitude helped him win gold medals and broke world records in the process.
Usain Bolt shaved .03 seconds off his previous time to win the 100m in world record fashion of 9.69 sec. When he erased the 200m world record of 19.32 set by America's Michael Johnson, Bolt became the first man since Carl Lewis (1984) to capture the Olympic sprint double and first ever to do it with world records in each event.
America's Michael Johnson did not think his record would be broken at this Olympics. However after witnessing a record-breaking performance, he was moved to say "This is Bolt's favourite event and he wanted that record; he went for it, he came here focused on it. He knew that most likely he'd win gold but gave it every single thing he had."
Those who look on Bolt's performance with suspicion should remember that he won the 200m world junior championships at 15 and was the first junior to break 20 seconds.
"I've been tested so many times in the competition I've lost count," he said. "We know we're good, we know we're clean. We work hard and any time you want to test us, it's okay."
Herb Elliott, a Jamaican team doctor weighed in on the subject by stating, "Anybody who wants to cast aspersions at our program about drugs I can say just one thing - they can go to hell. Let me tell you something. I am the person who tests in Jamaica. I tested him 15 times from November or December. Since he's come here, he's been tested six times for blood and urine."
What others have said about Bolt
Asafa Powell's coach, Stephen Francis, who first saw Bolt run as a 13-year-old at the Jamaican National Schools Championships says regarding the matter of cheating "It doesn't mean he's cheating, he's just using what he has. Usain ran 19.9 aged 17, when he was a skinny kid. Look at him now, 19.3 is not that surprising."
Former 200m record holder Michael Johnson commenting on Bolt's 200m performance, "My concern, and the reason I thought he might not get the world record here, was that he wouldn't have been working on his speed endurance, the ability to hold that speed for the entire race. But he showed that he actually has been working on that and was able to bring it home in 19.30secs; an incredible time, an incredible performance. This performance was much better than the 100m because we saw Bolt giving it every single ounce of energy, even a lean at the tape."
Renaldo Nehemiah, former American 100m hurdle specialist: "He has all the innate gifts you want in an average-size person, but he just happens to be tall. Right now, that makes him an impossible force to contend with."
David Howman, director general of WADA talking with CTV.ca in a phone interview from Montreal, "Perhaps they're making gains because at last the playing field is level. There's no systematic doping program like there was in the East Germany era, there are no cheats from the United States such as Marion Jones. Perhaps that means that the smaller countries that would otherwise be overwhelmed in terms of finance are able to perform."
The president of the IAAF Lamine Diack commenting on Bolt's 200m performance, "This 200, I was not expecting. Not this time. He was fantastic. We are very privileged to have this...He is good and great for our sport. He can help to build up our sport."
